GPS Cardio -
On Your Wrist.

Ritual's Apple Watch app brings GPS cardio tracking directly to your wrist - real-time pace, distance, heart rate, and route mapping without touching your iPhone. The Watch app runs independently during sessions, recording the full GPS track and heart rate data, then syncing to your iPhone session history when the session ends.

For runners, cyclists, and outdoor athletes, wrist-based tracking removes the need to carry a phone during sessions. The Watch handles the full recording responsibility: GPS coordinates, timestamp data, heart rate via the optical sensor, and session metadata. All of this transfers to Ritual on iPhone for the complete post-session analysis.

Your wrist is closer to the session than your pocket. Ritual puts the full tracking capability where the training is actually happening.

GPS accuracy on Apple Watch Series 4 and later is sufficient for running and cycling splits at the level of precision Ritual's analytics require. Pace is calculated from GPS coordinates at 1-second intervals. Distance accumulates from the same GPS track. The data quality matches what most dedicated GPS devices produce.

Ritual Context

Ritual's Apple Watch app records live GPS cardio sessions with real-time pace, distance, heart rate, and route data. All session data syncs to iPhone for full post-session analytics including interactive GPS playback.

Heart Rate Data -
Every Beat Tracked.

Heart rate is the most accessible real-time indicator of training intensity. During cardio sessions, heart rate directly reflects the metabolic demand of the effort - it tells you whether you are training in an aerobic base zone, a threshold zone, or a maximal effort zone, in real time, without additional hardware.

Ritual's Apple Watch app captures heart rate continuously during GPS cardio sessions. This data feeds the heart rate zone analysis in the iPhone app - identifying what proportion of each session was spent in each of the five standard training zones (easy, aerobic, threshold, hard, maximal). Zone distribution is more actionable than average heart rate alone: two sessions with the same average HR can have completely different training stimuli depending on zone distribution.

Heart rate data is not interesting as a number. It is interesting as a pattern across a session, a week, and a training block.

Resting heart rate, tracked passively by Apple Watch throughout the day, is one of the most reliable indicators of recovery quality. A resting HR elevated by 5+ beats above baseline typically indicates incomplete recovery, overreaching, or incoming illness. Ritual's Health Score integrates Apple Health heart rate data to factor recovery quality into the composite score.

Ritual Context

Ritual captures heart rate data from Apple Watch during GPS cardio sessions and uses it for zone analysis on iPhone. Apple Health heart rate data is also integrated into the Ritual Health Score calculation.

VO2 Max -
Measured on Your Wrist.

VO2 Max - maximum oxygen uptake - is the single most predictive metric of cardiovascular fitness and long-term health outcomes. Ritual's Apple Watch app includes a dedicated VO2 Max tracking view that captures aerobic capacity data during and after sessions and syncs it to the Ritual Labs profile on iPhone.

Apple Watch's VO2 Max estimation uses heart rate data during outdoor walks and runs combined with accelerometer data to estimate aerobic capacity. While not clinically equivalent to laboratory measurement, repeated estimates over time provide a reliable trend line for tracking aerobic development - which is the primary use case for athletes monitoring fitness progression rather than obtaining a one-time diagnostic number.

A single VO2 Max number is a data point. A trend line of VO2 Max estimates over months is a fitness story.

Ritual's Ritual Labs suite on iPhone includes a VO2 Max estimator calculator that complements the Watch-measured data with a formula-based estimate from session performance metrics. Used together, the two sources provide cross-referenced aerobic fitness data with more context than either produces alone.

Ritual Context

Ritual's Apple Watch app includes a dedicated VO2 Max session view. Captured data syncs to the Ritual Labs profile on iPhone, where it is tracked over time alongside the formula-based VO2 Max estimator for complete aerobic fitness monitoring.

Session Sync -
One App, Two Screens.

Ritual's Apple Watch and iPhone apps work as a single system, not as separate products. A session started on Watch appears in full detail on iPhone after sync. GPS coordinates, heart rate data, pace splits, and session metadata all transfer to the iPhone app where the full analytics suite - interactive map, pace chart, split breakdowns, cardio summary, and share card generation - operates on the complete dataset.

This architecture means the Watch handles what it does best - continuous sensor data capture during physical activity - while the iPhone handles what it does best - display, analysis, and sharing of the resulting dataset. The athlete gets the simplicity of a wrist-only recording experience with the analytical depth of a full iPhone interface.

The right tool for each job. Watch for capturing. iPhone for analysing. One coherent system for both.

Sessions recorded on Watch are added to the Ritual cardio history alongside iPhone-recorded sessions. There is no separate Watch history or secondary log. All sessions - regardless of which device initiated them - feed the same progression data, Health Score calculation, XP system, and achievement tracking. The system is unified.

Ritual Context

Ritual's Apple Watch and iPhone apps are a single unified system. Sessions recorded on Watch sync to iPhone and feed the full analytics suite, GPS playback, Health Score, XP, and achievement tracking identically to iPhone-initiated sessions.
